Avarol inhibits TNF-a generation and NF-kB activation in human cells and in animal models

Avarol is a marine sesquiterpenoid hydroquinone with interesting pharmacological properties including anti-inflammatory and antipsoriatic effects. In the present study we evaluated the pharmacological effect of avarol on some inflammatory parameters related to the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Avarol inhibited tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) generation in stimulated human monocytes (IC(50) 1 microM) and TNF-alpha-induced activation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB)-DNA binding in keratinocytes. Spontaneous tumour regression in keratoacanthomas is driven by Wnt/retinoic acid signalling cross-talk

A fundamental goal in cancer biology is to identify the cells and signalling pathways that are keys to induce tumour regression. Here we use a spontaneously self-regressing tumour, cutaneous keratoacanthoma (KAs), to identify physiological mechanisms that drive tumour regression. By using a mouse model system that recapitulates the behaviour of human KAs, we show that self-regressing tumours shift their balance to a differentiation programme during regression. Sulfamide antifolates inhibiting thymidylate synthase: synthesis, enzyme inhibition and cytotoxicity

Synthesis and biological evaluation are described of seven new analogues (3-9) of two potent thymidylate synthase inhibitors, 10-propargyl-5,8-dideazafolate (1) and its 2-methyl-2-deamino congener ICI 198583 (2). The detection of autoantibodies is an important element in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease progression in patients with autoimmune diseases. In laboratory diagnostic tests for connective tissue and autoimmune liver diseases, indirect immunofluorescence on HEp-2 cells plays a central role in a multistage diagnostic process. Isolation and subsequent analysis of murine lamina propria mononuclear cells from colonic tissue

Studies on colonic cells in the lamina propria (LP) of mice are important for understanding the cellular and immune responses in the gut, especially in inflammatory bowel diseases (such as morbus crohn and colitis ulcerosa). Potential use of activated carbon derived from Persea species under alkaline conditions for removing cationic dye from wastewaters

Abstract The use of Persea americana has been studied as an alternative source of activated carbon for the removal of dyes from wastewater. Chemical activation using phosphoric acid was employed for the preparation of the activated carbon (C-PAN).
